The Whanganui DHB and the Whanganui Regional Primary Health Organisation have assisted Balance NZ with funding to translate mental health recovery educational resources into Māori. As a result, Mary-Ellen Copeland’s internationally-respected Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) has been translated into Māori. Leading NZ recovery educators utilise WRAP as an important programme to assist the recovery journey of tangata whaiora. WRAP gives a practical and intuitive process by which to put recovery principles into practice. The completed translation is about 20,000 words and we hope that it will be a significant contribution to the availability of wellness resources in the Māori language.

Te Tumatakuru O’Connell of the Taumauri Trust made the translation. Te Tumatakuru is from Ngāti Tukorehe of Ngāti Raukawa-ki-te-Tonga. The Taumauri Trust (www.tmt.co.nzis New Zealand’s first web-based Māori language translation company and is located in Wellington. It is involved with the development of new terminology in Māori and the monitoring of Māori language localisation standards for translation.

Ngā Tāngata o Te Ao Mārama Roopu (Peoples of a New Beginning in Whanganui) is a mental health tangata whaiora/whānau group which collaborated with Balance NZ to make this translation available. The resource will be published on the web followed by a print edition. Please check back regularly with our website (www.balance.org.nz) for progress on the availability of the translation.
